Wildlife Conservation Board – Sacramento, CA
2021-present
Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist)
I am the Grant Program Manager for the Stream Flow Enhancement Program (SFEP). The SFEP provides funding to habitat enhancement projects with a focus on improving the ecological conditions of the stream and rivers of California. This program is funded by $200 million from Proposition 1 and $250 million from general state funds. As the Grant Program Manager I lead the effort to solicit applications, score and recommend proposals for funding, manage the awarded grants, create Scopes of Work, create and managing large and complex budgets, and measure outcomes of the ecosystem enhancement projects. I am also involved with the Delta Interagency Invasive Species Cooperative which helps to increase communication and coordination between a diverse set of state and federal agencies, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and other organizations which are all working to control invasive species in California.
Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy – West Sacramento, CA
2015-2021
Environmental Scientist – Range C
I helped create, and am now and the lead for, the Delta Conservancy Proposition 1 Ecosystem Restoration and Water Quality Grant Program for the selection of competitive grants in accordance with Proposition 1. I act as the Grant Manager for many of these grants overseeing numerous multimillion dollar budgets. Duties included creating Scopes of Work, creating and managing large and complex budgets, and measuring outcomes of restoration projects. Additionally, I manage the Arundo Control and Restoration Program for the Conservancy with the goal of controlling Arundo, an invasive terrestrial plant, within the legal Delta and restore native habitat. Working on this project involves overseeing a large and complex budget, securing appropriate environmental permits, conducting biological surveys for sensitive species, and overseeing restoration work conducted by our partners and contractors. I was the Lead Person for the Suisun Marsh Improvement Assessment, a project which identified and prioritized flood and drainage infrastructure improvements needed to maximize ecological benefits. I oversaw this project to a successful, timely, within budget completion. For two years I was the Tribal Liaison for the Conservancy working with local tribes to protect historical and cultural resources that may be affected by projects in the Delta. I also have served on hiring committees to select staff at the Delta Conservancy. Additionally, I help to organize and run litter clean-up events, oversee intern activities, work with local landowners to improve habitat on working lands, conduct outreach events, work with non-profit organizations to foster land and watershed stewardship in highschool students, help to organize technical workshops for scientists and managers, and write grants to fund projects at the Delta Conservancy and our partners.
California Department of Water Resources – Sacramento, CA
Jun to Oct-2015
Scientific Aid
As a member of the Biotelemetry and Special Investigations Unit, Bay-Delta Office, I worked on the Clifton Court Forebay near Byron, CA to assess predation threats to several threatened and endangered fish species. To assess these threats, I conducted avian surveys where I counted piscivorous birds and identified them to species to determine the size, composition, seasonal fluctuations and habitat use patterns in the population levels of piscivorous birds in and around the Forebay. I also conducted creel surveys where I interviewed anglers on fishing practices and angler success rates and also examined caught fish to determine species and size demographics of piscivorous fish caught by anglers out of the Forebay. Further, I aided in predator sampling efforts operating small boats and various fishing gear to capture, measure, mark (with Floy tags, PIT tags, and/or acoustic tags depending of fish size) and release piscivorous fish to track movement patterns and habitat use in the Forebay.
Variation among Evening Grosbeak Populations – Davis, CA
2009-2015
Primary Investigator
I studied the numbers of, and variations between, populations of Evening Grosbeak in North America to better understand how a nomadic species can form and maintain variation, and how these variations may contribute towards speciation. My intention was to determine the population structure within this species to inform management and conservation decisions that affect this declining species. Primary duties were to locate, capture, band, measure, and record individuals of the target species and analyze data using computer programs R Statistical Package, AviSoft, Audacity, and Syrinx.
Golden Gate Raptor Observatory – San Francisco, CA
1994-2010
Intern: Aided extensively in both the Hawkwatch and Banding programs: counting, trapping, handling, and taking measurements and blood samples from migrating raptors; entering and manipulating data; caring for lure bird health and safety.
Hawkwatch Dayleader: Held a leadership position for six years where I directed and managed a team of hawkwatchers as they observed and collected data on the fall migration of raptors.
Assistant Taxidermist: Prepared specimens of several raptor species for the GGRO research collection.
Docent: Presented formal and informal talks to the public on the history of the GGRO, basic hawk identification, and raptor ecology and physiology.
Southeast Ohio Shelterwood Study – Athens, Oh
Summer 2007, 2008
Crew Leader: Aided and organized a group of Field Technicians in locating new nests and monitoring existing nests. Trained Field Technicians in vegetation sampling protocols and use of GPS units as part of a study by Ohio State University on the effects of forest management practices on the breeding success of canopy nesting passerines in southeastern Ohio.
Bander/Field Technician: Primary duties were to locate, capture, band, measure, and re-sight individuals of target species.
Tussey Mountain Hawkwatch – State College, PA
Spring 2007
Official Counter
Responsible for collecting data on the rates of Golden Eagles and other raptors that migrate through the ridge and valley region of Pennsylvania in the spring. Other duties included collecting weather data, data entry to online database, and managing data sheets.
Dive-Note Origination in Anna’s & Allen’s Hummingbirds – University of California, Berkeley
2005-06
Research Assistant
Aided in a study to determine how the display dive-note of Anna’s and Allen’s Hummingbirds are produced. Helped record the dives of male hummingbirds of both species using high speed video recorders, digital camcorders, audio recorders, and digital photographs. Banded hummingbirds and prepared hummingbird study skins for the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology collection.
Point Blue Conservation Science – Petaluma, CA.
2001-03
